15/04/15 day 29, Wednesday, rest day in Collioure. Nice sunny morning but 40 to 50km/h winds in the late afternoon, I am not joking ! Walked 10kms around town & Chateau Royal (Castle).
Day of rest for Jenny & I. We had brekky at the Hotel, well one breakfast, Peire had to run to the local bakery for croissants & bun for me. He only speaks French and the day before Jen said just one breakfast meaning Wednesday only but not Thursday. All ended well, I was fed !
First stop was the town markets, fruit, vege, cured meats, pottery, soaps etc. all available. Some really great stuff at good prices, but if you can't consume it I don't want to carry it !
We then had a look around the Castle Chateau Royal of Collioure for 2€ each it was great, kept us interested for a couple of hours. Lots of history, without going into the detain it was originally built sometime prior to 673AD.
See History Quote: "
Roussillon was conquered by the Romans around 120 BC and the occupied by the Visigoths from 418. The first mention is about a fortified site in Collioure under siege in 673, by Wamba, king of the Visigoths who lay siege to the “Castellum Caucolibéri” to subdue a rebellion."
We then had lunch, a look around the Old Town, checked out house prices, a 50 square meter unit in town can be had for 150000€ . Then onto the Carrefour supermarket for supplies.
Back to the hotel for rest & relaxation, sure glad we are not cycling right now, I've heard stories about the winds in the Pyrenees and now we are witnessing them for real. 40 to 50km/h. Hope they are gone in the morning.
