Hay Fever Hell.

22/04/15 Day 36, Wednesday, Arles to Salon de Provence, via Saint Martin de Crau. 41kms (in two hours), very slight uphill gradient most of the way. Also 8kms walking around Arles & it's version of the Roman Colosseum. Wet & Foggy in the morning, cleared by 9.30am. Not much wind, temp reached 24degC. Departed 1pm, arrived 4.30pm.

I woke at about 6am to the sound of pitta patta on the tent, I thought it must be light rain. By 7.15am my mind game of bladder debate was over, Jen was now awake also. So we open the damp tent to be welcomed by a thick fog.

By 10am we walked back into town, mainly with the intention of viewing some  ancient Roman Sites, after 30 minutes we located the Amphitheater & not far away was a magnificently preserved Gladiators Arena, both built during the first decade AD. Jenny & I went in for a look around, it cost 8€ each. Quite amazing.

Once we returned to the campground, we commenced the pack up job & my hay fever started to really kick in. First there is a sneezing fit, usually consisting of a barrage of 5 to 7 savage sneezes. Then the throat starts to feel all irritated. Next one of the eyes gets itchy & scratchy, soon accompanied by the next eye. Then the eyes & nose start to dribble. Lastly a cough starts. It is bloody awful. There are fields & fields of various wild grasses & flowering plants, plus cotton looking stuff coming off some sort of tree. I think it's safe to say I won't be shifting to Southern France.

So we paid the CG bill, retrieved Jenny's Passport which we reluctantly allowed them to hang onto (it's policy ?) & hit the road. There were some minor roads, but the majority of the ride to Salon de Provence was along a minor highway filled with cars & trucks, there was obviously a very slight ascending gradient made obvious by the water channel full of rushing water (going the opposite direction) flowing west right next to us.

Literally 2 hours later we had covered the 40kms and found a Pharmacy to replenish our antihistamine supplies, next stop was a small cafe, the waitress sent the English speaking Chef out to take the drink and food order ! Once we were all fuelled up on chicken, duck, beer & wine, we headed for the Hotel Regina, more fun with charades, bikes packed into the garage and only 2 flights of stairs to tackle...happy wife, ? Now to pop some more pills to keep those wretched pollens at bay.

Searching for Ancient Roman Artifacts, Old Town of Arles, France.

Roman Amphitheater, Arles, France.

Walking around Arles was interesting, not the best foot pathes but ok considering they are like 2000 years old.

That's me the brawn of the outfit.

And there goes the good looking, Brains of the outfit. Looks like they are still building the Stadium. Been at it since 10AD bit slow I think.

Would have been a hard life for some back then.

Stadium is still used to this day for Festivals & Bull Fighting.

School Kids learning to be Gladiators. Gee they teach them young.

Car of the day, Rat Kombi Dualcab Ute.......or

or, Mini Countryman from the 60's, you decide.

Fields & Fields of Hay Fever Hell, they need a few million cows to mow this shit down.

Long, long straight minor highway, water is flowing the wrong way so we must be heading uphill to Salon.

Brains found the Hotel Regina first, so far it seems ok at 40€ per night.
