Sunday 1/03/15 Easy Day & some 4WDriving to Cave Hill.

125km today.
1/03/15 Sunday up at 8am B&E rolls with Nicole & Barry, site seeing on Beacon Hill Look Out. Left Norseman at 11.30am. We did 70kms to Higginsville Mine Site turn off then turned west for Cave Hill 50kms along 4wd track, average speed 30 to 40km/h arrived at Cave Hill around 2.30pm, climbed to the top, checked out the dam and cave then at 4pm found ourselves a nice spot to camp near 3 dams. Also looks like rain again tonight

It's going to be a long drive home tomorrow, we are also nearly ready to start looking for a decent 2nd hand camper trailer, maybe later this year.

Norseman the "Lucky" Horse. Got a gold nugget stuck in his hoof back in 1894. The current population of Norseman is 1100, back in the early 1900's it was 4000+

Jenny & Nicole, resting up and chatting on Beacon Hill Lookout.

The view from the Lookout

Happy.

40 more kilometers on this track.

Not everyone makes.

Worth the read, what gets me is they were only about 200mtrs from Sunday Soak (Water).

RIP Thomas Cantwell & Jerry O"Conlan (1895)

A taste of the Goldfield Wood Lands, only 300mm of rain falls here annually also when Will & Jenny are here...

Watch out for Dragons !

Cave Hill granite outcrop, note the wall to guide the water into dams, mainly for use on the steam trains.

The Main Dam at Cave Hill.

Climbing to the top of Cave Hill, in the back ground is the "Main Dam" you can also see our Cruiser parked in the middle of the photo.

We made it to the top & added our rocks to the Cain.

It was windy up here.

Panoramic View looking North East.

I'm fascinated with the engineering used to guide the water.

The reason this chunk of granite is called Cave Hill. The rock is about 2500 million years old.

This is the biggest cave, there was also smaller ones. I'm not religious but the place had a quiet spiritual feel to it. Aboriginal Sacred Site most likely?

3 Dams, near where we ended up camping, about 5kms away (by dirt track) from the Main Dam.

Our camp site, we had the whole place to ourselves. A family was camped over the other side near Main Dam. Can you see our Tent in amongst the trees?

  1. Hi I was wondering if the burial site 10kms west of Sunday Soak was sign posted and easy to find?

  2. Apologies for the late reply Malcolm (I did send an email response) . Just head out to Cave Hill via Higginsville and you will stumble on the graves. There has been some big bush fires out that way over the past 5 years so hopefully the hand written signs are still intact . Will

  3. May I cite and use your photo of the sign at Sunday Soak on my family tree? Thomas Cantwell was my Great Grandmother’s brother. Hearing this family story over the years and now seeing a photo is just amazing.
