Wind and Rain and Rugged Coast

07/10 - 08/10/15 Venus Bay to Elliston 77km

07/10/15 - The wind prediction for Wednesday was 25-35km per hour south easterlies all day, so we decided to stay and wait it out. It was a good decision. It blew wickedly all day, and after a cool morning, warmed up to give the billions of flies enough energy to piss us off. So we laid in, did some washing, which I managed to hang on the line with only eleven pegs, and caught up on phone calls, bills and blogging.  After lunch we went for a walk along the Southern Head Trail. It was an amazing view of a very rugged headlands and coastline. Really nice, except for the bloody flies. We cooked dinner early, so we could get to bed early and get going before the wind got strong.

Looking kind of west along the heads.

Come back from the edge Will, you are scaring me.

Looking back to the car park we started at.

Yep, it's windy, glad we didn't ride against it.

We found Rob coming in the opposite direction. Can you see him?

One of the coves on the inside of the heads.

A lovely memorial to two young guys who died in a boating accident. Money for it was raised by one of their friends who rode a bicycle 12,200kms.

Looking towards Venus Bay township.

Just a few flies on the leeward side......ugh!

08/10/15 - After getting to bed by 9:30, with a cool, clear night sky, we were woken up at 12:30am, by a massive crack of thunder, and huge drops of rain. A small localised thunderstorm had come from nowhere and drenched us, and flashed lightening, rumbled thunder, and went for about an hour and a half. That was not meant to happen! The weather report didn't say anything about lightening, thunder or rain, just south easterlies, which came after.

So when we all got up around six, things were mostly dry, so we packed up, had brekkie, and took off just after eight. It was a bit muggy, and a bit cool, with some clouds still around. But the wind was light. It took us no time at all to get back out the 6-7kms to the highway. From there, it was a rolling quiet ride, until we came to a turn off to Talia Caves. It was about 6kms in on a hard dirt road, so we all agreed to go in for a look. Why not?

We're all set, just one last attempt at rain.

A quick stop to take a layer off. It was an old school site.

There were some good inclines on this one, that had us down the gear range a bit, but on the way out, they'll speed us up nicely. As we rounded a bend, the views of the coastline cliffs, were great. We stopped at the first cave, called Woolshed Cave, and it was a very interesting formation, with a huge cave formed by the raging sea.  Then we rode a little further to The Tub, which looks like a sink whole, with a narrow gap/bridge where the ocean washes in on the king tides. Very good to look at.

Firm but bumpy, and hilly.

More rugged coast.

Just have to climb down there....

And Wow! It's pretty big.

This is where it comes in.

Thank god Will has hiVis, or we may have lost him.

My artsy fartsy shot....nice!

Watch out, cars apparently drive straight off the edge.

The Tub. Throw your washing in.

Looking from the other way.

We then did the return to the highway trek, bit painful, but worth the effort. Back on the highway, the rolling hills got a little steeper, and the wind picked up a little. We were pushing along quite nicely, in our little road train formation.  The traffic was pretty light, and it was getting quite warm. We stopped at Colton, an old townsite, just ruins now, which is about 20kms from Elliston. We all got our chairs out, and made some lunch and had a break. I was feeling a bit flat today, and it was a good break.

I'm not being rude, just stretching my sore arm.

While we had lunch, the wind dropped, then came back from the North East. Ripper, bit from behind to give us a final push to town.  We started off with a nice bit of downhill, and only a couple more smallish hills before finding ourselves at the blue sign of joy. Yeah, we did it again. The campground is about a kay from town, so Will and Rob rode in (unloaded) to get supplies, while I got our tent up, beds made, showered and washed me pants. We're all heading into the pub, for dinner tonight. Looking forward to that.

A very nice down hill run. A bit of wind behind makes it even better.

Standing up, stretching my legs. I know it doesn't look like I'm standing.

Ooh, there is a bakery, maybe tomorrow morning we can go there.

Will and Rob rode right by this sun baker on their way back from town...ugh!

It was a nice ride today, with mostly farmland, and salt lakes with views of the dunes. The ocean was never far away.
