Amazing Race Cyclist Style

01/10/15 Smoky Bay to Streaky Bay 79k

30/09/15 Smoky Bay - After a nice night with Rob and Max, we had a great sleep, and woke early. Max was still catching up on his blogging, so it was a good chance to find out more about each other, and explore a bit more around this little gem of a place. We walked out on the jetty, and there were lots of people fishing, and two young Sea Lions (they have ears, seals just have holes) lolling about at the end of the jetty. They were so cute, all tucked up, trying to sleep, while also trying not to float off with the current.

Boys enjoying some local oysters, caught today. A-La-Naturale.

Seriously Rob, what sort of cyclist carries a cheese grater?

Ocean swimming pool. Looks like only the cormorants are up for it today.

Look at these cute little guys. All tucked up, eyes closed, floating sleeping.

One more pic, so cute.

Last one..........for today! They were just cute.

As we were walking back off the jetty, we spotted a couple of bright coloured people and bikes, sitting on the rocks, enjoying some lunch. Bruce and Marg had arrived, after deciding not to stay another night in Ceduna. How about that, hey? Six touring cyclists in one spot. A very rare occasion. So, we left them to it, and walked around the town, checking it out, before a quick stop at the general store and back to camp. We all caught up, and then Max wanted to celebrate completing his blog, so four of us went down the beach with a few beers, and the guys had a swim, a few more beers, then back to camp to take over the camp kitchen. It was a great night, sharing lots of stories, and drinks, and we are all heading off (at different times), to Streaky Bay in the morning.

Some serious transport up there.

Hang on, we know those bright coloured people.......

Bruce and Marg! There's no missing them on the road folks.

Who needs a 4WD, when you've got a tractor.

Just a great view while having a relaxing drink on a beautiful beach.

That water is bloody cold, why do you think the oysters are so good?

Another amazing sunset......WOW!

Max and I are on cooking duty tonight.

More touring cyclists than you can poke a stick at.

01/10/15 The Race - it was race day, and team BruMarg had got the drop on us all, by not drinking last night, and getting up and going before 6am. Drat, that is sneaky. Teams Wiljen and RobMax were up and moving around 7, and going at equal pace. This was going to be a good race. Both teams had a couple of "Mr Have-a-chats" to navigate, but team Wiljen were next out of camp, due to Max not taking things too seriously, and Rob having a secret short cut.

It was a perfect day for the Amazing Race, and it was soon forgotten as we pedalled along the Flinders Highway, over the rolling hills, past the farm lands and sand dunes. Team BruMarg, were nowhere in sight, and team Wiljen took a short lunch break in the little fishing village of Haslam. It was a really nice spot, with a few houses, free camping, and a jetty. As we walked to the picnic shelter, we discovered other tyre tracks. Ah, team BruMarg were here. Hurry, eat, we might catch them, and we have to stay in front of team RobMax.

Coming into Haslam, it's actually a village, we weren't expecting that.

Collecting the oyster boats.

There are some great jetty shots here on the Eyre Peninsula.

The Haslam Post Office.

Back out on the highway, we expected to come across at least one of the other teams, but continued on our own. It was a very quiet day for traffic, and we enjoyed a push along, averaging about 17/18kms per hour. Around one, the wind picked up a bit and our speed dropped with it, and still no other signs of our competitors.

Snake! Snake! Oh, it's just rubber! I bet those others placed it there to slow us down.

Nice view Will. The colour of that water!

Another amazing bay. Be nice to go in, but it's a race!

We're close now.

About ten kays from our destination, we came to a tee junction and turned right, into the wind which was getting troublesome. Up a bit of a long hill, and we trudged on. The Big Blue sign of joy was two fold, as we began rolling down towards the seaside town, and we only had five kays to go. We decided to roll straight to the caravan park, in the hope that the other teams may have stopped in town for supplies. As we came to the park, we spotted team BruMarg, who looked like the had just arrived. We checked in and rode over to them. "Are Rob and Max here?" "Not yet!" " Woo, second, we will not be eliminated!".

There it is, down the hill...woo hoo.

Second isn't all bad is it? This is ok!

About an hour later, team RobMax arrived, to explain their late arrival. Due to their short cut, being half great gravel road and half boggy sand, they were required to engage the walking gear, and then there was the issue of Max and his Bob saving mission. There were many times they had to stop and coax a Bobtail lizard to change his mind and return to the bush instead of crossing the dangerous road.

Pelicans love to be in photos.

Max and Rob are here, cyclist convention can now begin!

He sat there for ages trying to get me to take this picture.

Our bikers dens.

Another great day riding, and we all enjoyed our own rides. Bruce and Marg do something called Geo-caching, where you try and locate these logbooks and trinkets that other people have placed around the country. It is apparently very popular and there are hundreds around Australia. This slows them up a bit, and they get to see lots of things others may miss. Rob and Max get slowed up because Max is on the save the Bobtail mission, and takes millions of pictures. Rob doesn't mind, because he is gets to learn about some new things. We all had a good day and enjoyed another night hogging the BBQ and talking. Bruce and Marg are heading off towards Venus Bay tomorrow, and we are all staying until Sunday. Footy grand final Saturday, so might be a slow start. Go the Eagles!
