Sea Lions and Dolphins

05/10/15 Baird Bay

There was no sleeping in on this day, we had booked to go on the Snorkelling tour, and had to be at the Eco place by 9:30. When we woke, it was pretty windy, which made cooking brekkie a bit tricky. We had all had a discussion and decided that we'd head off to Port Kenny after the tour. So we all packed up properly and headed off for the tour.

The kids getting sand blasted at the front of the tour place.

Our boat just waiting for adventure.

Alan got us all fitted for a wetsuit. Ha ha ha, first time I've ever had to wear a wetsuit, it was a challenging experience, and I was a bit nervous about how I'd look. But, there was no issues, and soon we were all headed out to the Sea Lion colony. It was getting windier, but when we reached the Sea Lions, we were a little sheltered. They are the cutest things. They are endangered, and this colony resides on a little island at the head of the bay. They were lazing on the beach, and the rocks, some babies feeding off their mums, and a couple of young males having a bit of biffo, and then they started to swim out to the boat.

Ok, I don't look as bad as I thought.

Check out those skinny legs, bloody jealous I am.

Alan the skipper, and Jay as we head out.

Look at those lazy buggers, come on guys, come and play.

Jay, the deck hand, jumped in the water (14C, brrr) and sorted out a mooring and set up a float, then we all got in. OH MY GOD, it was freezing. But after about 5 minutes I forgot about it. The Sea Lions were so amazing, just twirling, diving and spinning around us. Bursting from the water, trying to get us to join in. We can't do that you crazy buggers! But the more we tried, the more they did, and it was such a cool experience. They would glide by you, and just look inquisitively at you with their giant puppy dog eyes. We spent about two and a half hours with them.

Ok, I'm in. Yes, it's bloody cold.

So close to me, just checking everything out.

I think he's waiting for a play mate Will.

Rob and Max had a great time, rolling around with the Sea Lions too.

Then we were back in the boat, the wind had picked up more and was now raging at about 50kms per hour from the North. We bashed our way across the bay to the western edge, in the deeper water, to do the dolphin thing. The swell was about one and a half to two meters, but the Dolphins (they apparently love it like this), came straight over to the boat, and it was all on again. I have to tell you, I was a bit nervous at this stage, because we were at the entrance, and the word Shark, had been mentioned a bit, and Jay had attached a shark shield to his ankle and told us all to stay in a group near him.  For me, as I was second in line to get in, it was a matter of, if I think about this too much, I won't get in, so just jump in. That is what I did, and the Dolphins were just swimming around us, and man were they huge. So much bigger than the ones we see at home. We didn't stay in for very long, maybe half an hour, as we were getting swept towards the open sea, and it was getting a bit hairy, so Alan (the skipper) got us all out of the water and safely back to the resort.

What an amazing experience. No one felt dudded, or ripped off, and we were all buzzing after it. Not to mention starving from all that swimming in the cold water. So we got changed, had a pie and a cool drink, and decided that we were not going to ride into a 50km per hour head wind after that. So we'll camp another night, get up before the sun and get as far as we could before the wind started again.

Back at a the campground, we were the only ones there, so we took over the rotunda for real, and planned that we'd all sleep on the ground in there, no tents, to make our get away quicker. It was bloody hot, close to 40C, and in the evening (don't forget it's daylight saving), the wind died down and the flies were diabolical. All of us had fly nets, that we had never used, and today they were broken out. Oh, I was going frickin crazy. Sitting in my chair, with the fly net on, but they were all over us. I was seconds away from running around flailing my arms around and screaming insanely. We were unable to cook dinner until it got dark and they went to bed, so that was about 8:30. Then we got packed and went to bed. Only to be woken a couple of hours later when the wind changed direction and gusted through our camp, blowing everything off the table, Robs' bike over, and making us run around sorting it all.

Will is cleaning our little stove, it has a bit of a blockage.

There were so many more of these pesky little blighters.

Getting up at 5:30 in the morning after all this better be worth it you guys, or else!
