The Wave, The Lake and The Devil

08/09/15 McDermid Rock to Woodlands Picnic Area 67km

Another great camping night, and early rise to enjoy the birds and rejuvenate the fire. Barry made us a glorious concoction of bacon, beans, chorizo and eggs poached in the mix. A couple of coffees, then we packed and went for a bit more of a look at the mini Wave Rock formations. Then we hit the road by 9am, after a brief chat to some other campers, who were on a months exploration of the Woodlands area and heading off to Helena and Aurora Ranges further north. Another place for us to explore in the future.

Views from the top, Gnamma holes full of taddies.

Whose been doing the gardening up here?

The Balancing Rock, it doesn't even look real...how? why?

Can you see the speedy little dragon? There were so many, and my god they are fast.

Not a bad imitation of the bigger rock, and why not do what is expected.

There was another strange wind blowing today, but luckily, it seemed more northerly than easterly, and didn't cause us too much drama. The road was pretty good, and we saw only two cars all morning. It wasn't long before we came upon Lake Johnston, which actually had some water in it, and is very pretty.

Lake Johnston. It actually had some water in it.

Plenty of big blue sky today, and it was lovely and warm. Just right for riding. The road was up and down slowly, with nothing major, and we made good time. We pedalled along, listening to the millions of birds chirping away, and busying themselves with spring activities. The flies are very friendly, so that keeps us moving at a good pace, apparently they can fly up to 26kms/hr, so we have to push it out to beat them. Ok on the down hill runs.

Big blue sky and lots of red road.

We came across Disappointment Rock, and decided to take a passing photo instead of visiting it, one for the next trip. Then around the corner, the third vehicle of the day, Barry, Melba and Lizzy, with our lunch. This is friggin awesome. How are we ever going to cope across the Nullarbor?

There is Disappointment Rock, Barry says it is really cool and has a good camp area.

While we broke for lunch, the boys spotted some good wood for tonight's fire, so loaded it into the trailer. We chatted, and Barry gave us the bad news. He'd already driven to tonight's campsite, to make sure it was alright, and discovered it was actually 78km from McDermid Rock, not 60 like we originally thought! Bum, that men's we are only halfway, not almost there! Oh well, we are feeling good and it is a pretty good road.

Put another log on the fire......Barry, cook me up some bacon and some beans...

Will made some adjustments to his seat to help get through the last bit.

Off we went again, with full tummies and rested bums. We were just going pretty slow, enjoying the peace and the bush, when I happened to look left and spot a cute little Thorny Devil lizard. I love these little buggers! We had to stop and get a picture, and Will tried to pick him up for a close up. He was well feisty, and spiked Will for his efforts. He jumped out of Wills' hands, and landed on his head. He righted himself, shook his head, then trotted away a bit. We squirted some water on his back, so he could have a drink (they have little channels of spikes to channel water down their backs to their mouths and eyes, if it rains), so cute.

Isn't he cute? Got to love these little guys.

Zoom in, he is giving me the evil eye....feisty!

We pedalled some more, and came to the 50kms to Norseman sign. We paused for a drink, and to check distances. There was a bit of confusion, as Barry had said the Woodlands camping spot was only 40kms from Norseman, which meant we only had about 10 kays to go, but if we had to do 78kms today, we should have almost 20 to do???

Maybe we should just keep going to the shower, or can we last one more night?

Thinking back on Barry's description for our ride today, he mentioned a big hill (it was not steep, but went for 8kms, slowly up to where we were now), then a small down, a little jump up, then about 6 or 7kms all down hill to the turn off. We were pretty sure this was the start of happiness, cause I can't see another bloody great incline up ahead. So off we went with our fingers crossed that the 78km number was a mistake, and we only had less than ten to go.

The last few kays are always good, when you know you are done.

Sure enough, right on 67kms, we spotted the sign, turned in and spotted Barry, just as he was coming out to the road to see if we were around. Great timing, and another fantastic camp spot. Salmon gums, birds, and plenty of wood for the fire. All we needed now was Nicole, who was coming to meet us after work and bringing dinner. The boys were also hoping their ESP had been working and she would bring beer for them too. They were out!

Tent set up and clothes airing. I really don't think that will help though.

Nicole arrived around 4pm, with a delicious chicken casserole, new potatoes and fresh home grown spinach, and to top it all off, cake and custard. She didn't bring beer, (I didn't care) but she did bring Ginger Beer, which was lovely. After a nice dinner and catch up, she took all the dishes and drove home, leaving us to relax around the fire, dribble more shit to each other and have another early night. Don't know if it gets any better than this......oh, yes it could.......we are desperate for a shower! Luckily, none of us has had one, or there may be an issue!

Nicole having a well earned rest around the fire. Our last night on Part B.
