Eyre Highway Rollercoaster

12/09/15 Frazer Range Station to Balladonia 90km

What an awesome sleep. Awake at 6am, listening to the sounds of busy farmers, birds and no wind. It was warm already, and we laid in bed reading for a bit longer. We cooked our porridge in the camp kitchen so we could charge our gear, then got busy re-sorting our bags again, for the return of Fat Betty and The Dawg.

Just about ready, just got to put my shoes on. It's warm already!

This is going to hurt, is all I thought, when we got going around 9am. The bikes did feel heavy again, and the steering a bit less responsive. Never mind, we'll get used to it without Barry, eventually.

So out onto the highway we go, after waiting for a couple of huge trucks to pass. It was straight up a small hump of a hill, which had us gearing down to 5 already. Wow, Betty, maybe two serves at dinner was not a good idea for you. But just over that hump, we had a bit of down which helped us gain some momentum, oh and the westerly breeze was starting to offer a little assistance. Nice!

We haven't even reached the Nullabor properly, but look at that view.

Before we knew it, we were hammering along over 25kms/hr, up the bumps, down the bumps, then we'd slow to 15km/hr for a bigger one. This is always when the bloody huge trucks would catch us, and as we're going uphill and they can't see oncoming cars, we'd get off on the gravel and slow down even more. But there was always the next little Rollercoaster to get on.

After 25kms, we stopped for a short break, to stretch and have a snack, then hit the Rollercoaster road again. The wind had increased, and often we were rolling in top gear at 40 kays an hour. This is acceptable. So at 50kms, and 2 1/2hrs riding, we stopped for lunch in the bush, on the side of the road. Boiled eggs, cheese (a bit melted) and buns. We had a half hour break before the last 40kms to Balladonia.

Quick break Jen, we got kays to smash out!

Nice little lunch spot in the bush. Just a few flies, but a nice breeze.

What a Rollercoaster road, at least we'll be going down to start the final run.

Wind picked up some more, and there were heaps of trucks today. It's Saturday, why are there so many? But the bumps were getting smaller, still more down, and we cranked out the last 40kms in just one and a half hours without a break. My feet were burning, and my butt was sore, and I sank two beers in record time, when we arrived.

I love these blue signs of joy. 5kms left. Come on, smash it out!

I don't care what the time is, I say it's beer o'clock!

Yay, last bit of luxury. I'm gonna use it all up!

Westerlies are expected tomorrow, stronger than today, and we'll be camping out in the bush, so we got a room, for a night of luxury. Shower, wash clothes, and less packing in the morning. Looks like we are really gonna be out there tomorrow.
