The Road of Bones

15/09/15 Caiguna to 45kms East of Madura 112km

After an early night and good rest, we were up and at 'em this morning. Breakfast in the roadie, bacon and eggs, at 7am, we got moving by 7:30am. Wait, how come that clock says 8:15am? What? WA has two time zones? That's right folks, it's unofficial, but out here, from Caiguna to the boarder, they run on Central time.

There was again a howling westerly, of some sort, freezing cold, but we weren't complaining. Except when we passed the various road kills, in different stages of decay. We tried to hold our breathe, but the wind just carried the odour along for miles. Some were so bad you had to chew it. Ugh!

Cruising along enjoying the scenery. It is very green out here this year.

What is that? Could really be anything.....all I know is, it bloody stinks.

Drinking lots of water today, so lots of little breaks were necessary, and riding through the treeless plain, was fantastic. There were heaps of trees! We spotted a mob of huge kangaroos off in the plain on the northern side, and they seem to have spotted us too, 'cause they all stood up tall to check us out. I yelled out to them to stay over there and save themselves.

Kids having a well earned rest, while we do too.

At about eight kays before we got to Cocklebiddie, some grey nomads slowed up along side us and asked if we'd like to pull up so they could make us a coffee. Man, how cool, but we're not falling for that one again, and hopefully declined their very kind offer nicely. I felt bad, because they were being kind and generous. Thank you grey nomads.

Oh, these little bends in the road are very interesting and exciting.....

After three hours riding, we'd reached Cocklebiddie, and a nice hot coffee and some food. Nothing too big today, as that didn't work out too well before. We filled our water containers secretly, in the toilets, as they make their own water using Reverse Osmosis, and it is expensive, they don't really want to give it away. We stopped for about an hour, then carried on. We were aiming for a rest area about 42kms further on.

There's our lunch stop, now let's not get carried away, we have to ride on after.

There was so much roadkill along this stretch of road, but none was fresh, by that I mean recent, as it was all pretty " fresh", if you know what I mean. Just think yourselves lucky, that we didn't take too many photos and that you can't smell it. Ugh, it was gross.

Might have to get CSI out here to identify this one....I can't tell by the smell.

A bit of a surprise for us, was the number of big rises in the road. We have never really noticed as we drive, but it is really not at all flat. Also, around 1pm, the wind decided to change direction, more southerly, which was a hell of a lot less helpful, and slowed our pace right down. We were looking at the road ahead, praying for a left turn, so the wind would again push us a bit. I was petering out after a hundred kays, and had to stop a few kays short of our target. Just needed to get off the bike for a bit, before doing the last 3kms to the rest stop. Aaahhh, made it!

This looks like us Jen, what do you reckon?

We selected a camp out the back in the bush, got the chairs out to chill out for a sec, and had a little closed eye rest in the warm sun. Would have looked like two dead people laid out on the chairs to anyone wandering by. Then it started raining, so we grabbed the blue tarp and teepeed ourselves in, until it stopped. Then we collected wood, and it rained again, so we continued this diving under the tarp, wood collecting circus for a while, before putting up the tent, lighting the fire, cooking dinner and finally retiring into the tent before the next shower. Hope it doesn't keep raining, it's not supposed to.

We'll just wait for this shower to pass, then put up the tent.....ok?

Awesome fire, thank you Will, just have to wait for the next shower, then we can cook.

Nice little rainbow to end the day.
