Frickin Freezing!

1/09/15 Cuballing to 40km East of Kulin 75kms

So we had a great night at the Cuby, with some very nice locals, then a good sleep in the old pub by ourselves, and struggled to force ourselves out of bed. It was freezing. We packed up and rugged up before heading down to help ourselves to cereal, toast, juice and coffee. We made coffees in the thermos' for later, then brushed our teeth and loaded up the frozen kids.

We headed over to the roadhouse, which is also the local post office and shop, and bought some food to get us through the day. Will had high hopes of us making it to Kulin today, which was well over a hundred kilometres, but just in case, we stocked up. "Just in case ", we're gonna need that food Will, cause I'm not ready for a hundred just yet.

Yep, it is soooo cold, that scarf stayed on all day till I went to bed.

It was 32kms to Wickepin, so that is what I set my sights on first. The temp was a miserable, bone chilling 8C, and I had everything I could find to keep me warm. Full gloves, thermal under layer, rain jacket, scarf, long pants, and even pushing uphill I didn't get hot. My toes went numb straight away, so then I couldn't feel them.

We stopped so Will could put his Doo rag on to cover his ears.

There were lots of farms, wheat, sheep and lovely Canola fields, and lots of those long, long inclines (not quite hills, but going up for a bloody long time). There are about 5 big trucks carting canola for CBH, that went passed us a couple of times each during the day. They were great, and we gave them as much room as possible. They even gave us a little wind push up the hills.

Still more lovely Canola fields.....we must produce a hell of a lot.

One of the trucks heading back for another load. We were reading the sign.

We got to Wickepin, and we're in need of something to warm us up, so we got a sausage roll (disappointingly, it was not very warm), and filled our water bottles. We had a nice break and checked out Faceys Homestead. We bought some more food for dinner, and carried on.

Down town Wicky, don't blink....

More hills, rolling and rolling eastward, the wind was trying to be helpful, but it was more side on and so bloody cold. We could spot some rain coming, and just then spotted an outback tennis club, with shelter and water. Brilliant, so we took another breather, and ate some more food ( we seem to be starving, the old really uses a lot of energy) and finished our coffees. We missed the rain, so decided to carry on. We were both a bit tired, but thought we could do another 15kms to Wogolan, an historical sight you can camp at.

Pulling off the road to the Ten Mile Tennis Club for shelter. And food.

Coffees and half a ham and salad roll to keep us going, at the tennis club.

Somehow, it got colder, and we managed to just ride in the middle of two separate showers, and only get a little bit of drizzle. We took shelter under some trees in the worst bit, and watched some showers over the hills, quite relaxing, freezing really. Then we pushed on. It wasn't supposed to be far, about 1km, but after riding that, there was nothing. Another check of the Wickicamps sight, and onward up another hill.

Just a nice photo looking across the paddocks.

What's this stupid weather doing now? Oh, a frost overnight hey? Great!

Soon we came to the road we were looking for, only to discover the campsite was another 5kms along it, up two monster hills. Finally we found it, and chose a spot to camp. Not really ideal, as it was a bit close to the road, but at 5pm, freezing cold, and heaps of good wood to burn, we set about getting organised. It started to rain just as I had the tent up and Will had the fire going. Luckily, it wasn't too heavy, and stopped pretty quickly.

Quickly, quickly it's starting to rain again...bugger!

Both of us had got out of our cycle gear, and rugged up, beanies up and gone full geek, with our head torches on. Now for some delicious salmon pasta and sauce, and a hot cup of tea. Sit by the raging fire before hitting the sleeping bags. Which we had joined together, and got out our liners, as it was going to be zero degrees. It felt like it too.

I would have sat on that fire if I could....so so cold!
