Dirt Demons

06/09/15 Forrestania Plots to The Breakaways 73km

Happy Fathers Day Everyone!

I woke up at about 4am, and I was freezing. I tried to bury myself down in my sleeping bag, and cocoon myself inside to stay warm. Damn, I wish we had joined the sleeping bags together last night. Somehow, through my need to pee and the freezing cold, I managed to get a couple of more hours sleep. When I woke again, the others were awake, and I could here Nicole and Barry, who had slept in their swag under the stars (thank god they didn't freeze to death), discussing Barry's jacket, which had been left out, and was covered in ice. I am definitely not moving yet!

That jacket is navy blue! And I'm not sure it's actually that happy.

At around 7am, the need to pee was way too much, and I was forced out of the security of the tent and my cocoon of warmth. The others had all been up for about half an hour and the fire had been re-stoked to warm us all up a bit. Coffee was on, and we were all set with beanies and placed ourselves in the sunshine like lizards, to get warm.

What the hell is going on here? Winter was over days ago people!

There was ice in the drink containers, on the detergent bottle we left out, and the dishwashing water from last night. Definitely below zero last night. Today was looking like it was going to be perfect, with no clouds, very slight breeze, and it was warming up nicely. Nicole got breakfast started, scrambled eggs and bacon, and I cooked the toast, all over the coals, and with a second cup of coffee, we had the perfect start to what was indeed a great days riding.

Super breakfast for Fathers Day, but you still have to put in a big day Will!

Totally boganned up, eating my awesome brekkie.

All of us got stuck into packing up, and before we knew it, we were ready to head off. Barry was taking Nicole back to Norseman, as the Director of Nursing, unfortunately she is on call and had to be back in town. After that, he was coming back to meet us at The Breakaways. So at 9:30am, we all took off again.

What a great view to start the day! Love the outback colours of this country.

There are a few mine sites out this way, mostly nickel, but this one is gold.

Our riding today took us from about 340mtrs above sea level, to 444mtrs, and we mostly road uphill, with small downs, for about 54kms. The road was all dirt, but in pretty good condition, and just before lunch and the boarder of the Kondinin and Dundas shires, we came across a grader and roller, sorting out the road surface for us. We actually passed them going up a hill, super dooper!

We could smell the cyanide from the process plant, quick, let's get out of here.

So many of these little purple shrubs, they were almost fluorescent!

Are we there yet? Almost Jen, a couple more days.....

Huh, we're actually catching up to these guys, going up hill......cool!

We stopped for a chorizo and cheese sanger at the rest stop near the boarder, and enjoyed the sun and the flies. 25kms to The Breakaways! Surely some downhill? Not yet.  We did come passed some burnt out areas, from fires over the last summer. It looks so devastated. Nothing is left. It is only just starting to show some new signs of life.

This road just goes and goes and goes.....it is great!

Fire is such a devastating force. It is like the apocalypse! I hope there are no zombies.

Finally after Gravillea Hill, we started to head down hill more than up, and we lazily just relaxed and rolled along at about 20-25kms/hr for a bit, resting our bums. The road wasn't quite as good here, but still no problems. We cruised on into The Breakaways around 2:30pm, beating Barry, who rolled in with a trailer of wood for another fire tonight. It is going to be another freezing one tonight. So far we are feeling good and loving this part of the trip.

Such a beautiful camp spot. The formations are awesome, and it is sheltered.

Barry and Lizzy have us all sorted out, with Spag Bog, beer, and a lovely fire.

Happy campers, thank you support crew! Makes it seem pretty easy doesn't it?
