Rhine, Rollin' and Relaxing

13/05/15 Day 57, Chur to Buchs 50kms

We had a pretty good sleep, but were woken quite early by the gunfire and lawnmowers. No problem, Will ducked to the camp shop for some bread and milk, while I rolled up all the bedding etc. The Dutch guys were off about 9am, and we were all organised by 10am. Wolfgang was hanging around for sight seeing, so we said cheerio, and thought he'd probably catch us in a couple of days anyway.

Trying out his new "Head Thingy", that is actually what it's called. We say DoRag!

Will's hey fever is getting bad again, now we're lower in the valley, so lots of pills, nasal spray, eye drops, you name it.

The route was on our doorstep, so straight onto it, and out into the rural farmlands we go. Along the railway line, heading sort of East. Mountains either side of us, and flat or slightly downhill most of the way. Nice!

This would be fun to ride? Much easy getting up those hills.

You can see me right? I don't need the fluoro thing?

Oh, side story, I've been slack, so was desperate to do some washing. Had planned to do it when we got to Chur, but relaxed and chatted instead, then this morning, went to see how I go about doing it, only to discover the ONLY washing machine was booked out until tomorrow. Oh, dear! Apparently Wednesday is the permanent residents washing day....that'll teach me!

So, I am wearing my only clean top, and not clean bike pants. All black, stealth clothes, or solar clothes? Will has given me the orange vest to wear so cars can see me.....yeah, like I'm wearing that! I tied it to the back of the bike, she'll be right.

Riding through the fields, alongside the train track, hardly another person or vehicle seen, but when you need to cross the railway line in the middle of nowhere? A bloody train comes! Totally ruined my momentum.

Totally messed with my momentum man! Oh, I've overshot the turn, ha ha ..

Yep, river's still there, and flowing faster than us.

Going up above the valley for the views. No, I'm not wearing socks and sandals.

Got photo bombed while trying to take a shot of the goat fountain. They were embarrassed!

Weaving our way along, more cute little villages, some hills, what? It was supposed to be flat! Oh well, got us up above the valley for some great views, and we stumbled on a hidden gem for lunch. Could camp there, but we'd only done just over 20kms. So we just enjoyed lunch.

Cool old wagon in mint condition. What a way to enjoy your day.

What find, table, seat, freezing cold water, and shade. We could have had a fire too.

Had an awesome, straight downhill run out of one village, after some roadworks, and both beat our top speeds. Will was 65.7 and I got to just over 67, without pedalling. He he he, cool.

This path follows the Rhine , which is awesome, but no wind protection.

After our lunch stop, we were into the wind along the river, with Liechtenstein on the other side. A little country, used as a tax haven for wealthy Europeans. There was a track along the other side, and lots of bridges to get there, but we decided to give it a miss today. Maybe tomorrow.

Cool old wooden bridge. Looks like matchsticks. Going to Liechtenstein?

The headwind was just starting to piss us off, when we arrived into Buchs. Pretty little place, with lots of young people, all riding around on their bikes or scooters or skateboards. We stopped for some shopping, as tomorrow is All Saints Day here, so everything will be closed.

Camping in Buchs, such a cute little spot. Tables, seats and cover.

Again the route took us straight to the cute little camp ground. Lovely lady helped us get sorted and told us about a shop just round the corner to get some extra stuff tomorrow. We had just set up our tent, had a shower and put my washing on, when Wolfgang rolled in. Huh, he said he'd checked out the sights of Chur, then got bored so decided to ride. Nice. He set up his tent, and another German cyclist rolled in, Timon, in jeans, check shirt, beer in hand on a 40yr old bike with only three gears. He had also ridden the pass, and was following the river, doing about 100kms per day. Amazing! Both men in their late 50's.

All set up and relaxing. Cycling convention about to start.

So we had a mini touring convention, with Wolfgang the interpreter (excellent English), many beers, and charades. Great laugh. As we made some dinner, Wolfgang sorted himself out some soup, while Timon had another beer. No food for him, just beer. Huh.

That bloody clock in the background, chimed for 15mins at 4 o'clock. Bloody loud.

It got dark, it started to rain heavily, so we put the bikes under the covered area, and all scuttled to our tents. Fingers crossed we stay dry, those drops are huge. Earplugs in, Wills' had lots of beers and red wine, and out like a light. I woke in the night for a toilet break, it had stopped raining, and I was confused as to which tent to head for in the dark, as they were all snoring! Ha ha ha, thank god for earplugs.

Wolfgang from Germany. Really nice man and amazing cyclist.

What a great day, we met people from Norway travelling to Italy, lovely couple, a German couple travelling in a soft to 1980's Mercedes, with a tent, and a couple of other crazy cyclists. And the views continue to amaze.
