Old Abandoned Rail Lines are the GO !

2/05/15, Day 46, Saturday, Italy, Sanremo to Albenga, lunch in Imperia. shopping in Alassio. Sun/cloud, 18degC, spent 53€. Slight tail breeze. Covered 56kms. Departed 10.30am, Arrived 4pm

Hi everyone, it's 7.40pm right now, still day light outside but misty/cloudy ,Jenny & I are lying in our little tent after cooking some ravioli & drinking a fine 4€ bottle of Italian Red Wine. While enjoying a million dollar view of the Med & Marina below. It's been a fairly straight forward easy day so I'm going to let the dot points & photos do the talking.

Don't panic Jenny will be back to blog on wiljen's adventures in about 5 days, once we cross into Switzerland. I'll return to wiljen's Eurovelo adventure on CGOAB. That is what has been agreed to, also after using blogger for a few weeks I'll now rate it 3.5 stars out of 5 & CGOAB a very solid 4+ stars.

*Bikes are a bit dirty from rain before Nice & yesterday, I cleaned & oiled the chains, then put an extra 10psi in each tyre, all at 58psi now.
*Cleaned up Bungalow, got our 200€ bond back & left campground at 1030am.
*Jenny's back to her normal self today, so all is good in the world.
*We rode approximately 20kms along an old rail line that has been converted into a cycle/walking path. It was very busy but we managed to maintain 15 - 20km/h. Really great ride !
*We met Michael from Denmark another touring cyclist along the bike path.
*Made our own lunch of cheese, tomatoes, crackers & salami.
*Tried to obtain petrol for our stove but was refused service.
*Rode through some lovely Italian towns and along a gorgeous coastline.
*Found a Carrefour Supermarket in Alassio & restocked our supplies.
*Also managed to purchase some ULP95 from a Agrip Service Station in Alassio for the MSR Whisperlite Stove.
*Rode up many coastal hills & down as well, some of this included riding through "Galleria's" sort of like half tunnels.
*Found a campground 18€, but had to haul our bikes up a big hill to the tent site (we call it the chook yard). The campground is set into the cliff, looking over the Med.
*Had to pay for a token, so we could have a 4 minute shower, which was cold!

Overall a good day !

Jenny headed east along an abandoned rail line that has been converted into a cycle & walking path, it was very busy and you had to keep your wits about you. Every man, woman, child, dog & cat in Northern Italy was on there, doing their "fitnessing" !

At least we were given a reprieve from riding up hills, one of the tunnels went for over a kilometre . This photo is the first one where I've perfected the "Reverse underarm while you ride at 20km/h photo shot" .

The old Sanremo Train Station....tickets please !

Another Reverse Underarm Camera Shot, but my gut got in the way. The difficulty factor of this photo manoeuvre on a bike negotiating a busy bike path or road is 7 out of 10. Jenny & I have decided.

Ok it's 18 degrees, if you are out of the wind it may be nice to sun bath, but have a closer look at all the Italian Surfers waiting for the next BIG wave, they'll be waiting a while I think. And the water is cold.

Looking back towards Sanremo, also note all the Jet Plane contrails in the sky. Drink up Jenny time to cover some more kays....

Stopped at a Cafe that you can only access by bicycle or walking, there were 100's of push bikes parked up there at 11am, while everyone had their Birra's & Cappacino's.

Now I know the swarve looking dude appears to be "yours truly" with a neat beard, but have a closer look & you will see it's our new Touring Cyclist mate Michael from Denmark. He was kitted out with all the top shelf gear & had a nice Dutch Kona touring bike. He likes to stealth camp when he can, said he was headed towards Rome. Good luck Mick ! Onya !

Zooming through a very long abandoned rail tunnel on the bike path.

The Italian coast line we have been riding is very rugged, cliffs, rocky and interesting.

We have seen a big church in every town we have ridden through, this one was extra big.

Half tunnels, Galleria's, we have ridden through a few of these.

Actually we have stopped to do a map check here. I think Davo GPS is wrong, so we consult, Google Maps, Michelin Maps, Me.Maps. Which are all map apps on our phones & Mini iPads. PS Davo was right on this occasion.

Near the cliff face campground we spent the night at, we are calling the island, Godzilla Turtle Island ! Though the man at the CG called Saint Maria something or rather Is. We like our name better ! It's easier to remember ....

Another Marina near the Campground, I bet they live in fear of Godzilla Turtle Island.

Ok so we book into the CG, after a very steep climb with our loaded bikes (look at the glow on our bodies) we made it to the "Chook Pen" . "Well I guess that will do then" says Will. "Can't wait for my lovely 4 minute Shower" says Jen......45 minutes in the future Jenny returns from the Shower "F$@k it's bloody cold" .

We don't carry fold up chairs on our bikes, I make it my mission in life to locate and appropriate chairs that I can find. Usually from abandoned Caravans, well there was no one staying or using them....I always return them in the morning.

All set up in the "Chook Pen" at the end of a day & no beer....

Not so much luck with finding a table. Getting a cheap dinner together.
